Arkpad Inspiration

I am constantly looking for interior inspiration. There are loads of fab online sources... other blogs, Pinterest, real estate websites, and many, many more. Somewhere I like to check from time to time is the Brazilian website Arkpad, and it never fails to inspire.

Pop over and see if you can find some images that speak to you!

Cool Cafes

I love a good cafe, and I have my favourites in Hawke's Bay where I go to for meetings, catching up with friends, and relaxing with my family. Good food, coffee and service is paramount, but obviously for me the decor is very important too. Commercial spaces likes cafes, restaurants, offices, and retail shops have the opportunity to be really creative, and you can often be more adventurous than in a residential space. But the thing is, you really need to update them every couple of years, because of the high traffic wear and tear, and also just to keep things fresh. Here are a few I particularly love...

Restaurant Design

I love working on interiors for our Bibby + Brady residential clients, but we recently got to put together a design for a restaurant, which was amazing and so much fun. In commercial jobs you get to be a bit more adventurous and daring than you would be in someone's home. It wasn't a complete re-design, certain elements were to remain.

With restaurants, especially those that are only open in the evening, the ambience and atmosphere are very important. Lighting is great for creating that. We chose the most divine black wallpaper covered in a native New Zealand design - ferns, tui, crayfish, kowhai... This was to run down one wall behind the high banquet seating, teamed with gorgeous brass wall sconces and black chairs. We wanted to create a sophisticated, moody atmosphere.

At the entrance to the restaurant there is a bar area which has a more casual, relaxed feel. This is where you can have a drink while you wait for a table. We opted for deep sea blues, and sandy golds. Copper pendants hang over the restaurant servery echoing the wall-mounted lights. Behind the servery the kitchen is a flood of bright light, in contrast to the softly lit restaurant.

Restaurant Three Ways

I love to eat out, and for me there are three very important elements to a great dining experience - the food, the service, and the atmosphere. The decor has a huge part to play when it comes to the atmosphere. I have chosen three restaurant to show you - all quite different, but all very cool.

Chooks is a restaurant in North London specialising in grilled chicken, subs and salad. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal with a retro Americana vibe. I love the stripped back raw look of the exposed brick, timber and neon sign.

Habibis is an Arabic-Mexican fusion taco restaurant in Mexico. Originating as a humble taco stand, the owners wanted to keep the street-friendly, casual atmosphere while also reflecting the exceptional quality of the food. The result is clean and funky, while the amazing branding also incorporates it's Arabic-Mexican background in a contemporary way.

Café Artcurial is well loved in Paris, and it's easy to see why. The dark wood, fabrics, and leather panels are striking against the geometric wallpaper, glass pendants and marble table tops. It oozes sophistication, and you can just imagine at night, when it's dimly lit, how incredible the atmosphere would be.

Another way I determine if a cafe or restaurant is fabulous, is the loo! A bathroom is obviously a necessity in a place where you're dining, and if they've gone to the trouble of making it as cool as the rest, than that's a sure sign that the place has style!

Jessica Helgerson Interior Design

I was thrilled to come across the website of Jessica Helgerson Interior Design recently. Some of the photos in her portfolio are absolute favourites of mine, but I never knew their origin. Based in Portland, Oregon, the mission of JHID is to create beautiful, livable spaces that meet their clients' aesthetic, functional, and economic goals, while respecting the environment.

Working with both residential and commercial interiors, Jessica's style is clean, elegant and timeless. She starts by deciding what the best design is for the client, and the space, and what will stand the test of time, stylistically and functionally. What I love most about Jessica's interiors are the layers of fresh, contemporary elements - look closely at the photos below and take note of the gorgeous lines of the furniture, the stunning lighting, and the sleek finishes. I am a huge fan!
